I’ve been in the online business marketing arena for quite some time now. I’ve worked with countless brands, and even promote my own brand on a daily basis. Long before there was online marketing, I was a publicist (before marriage and kids) for five years working for the world’s largest indoor/outdoor museum also known as The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan. Then, we called it Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village which changed to its current name right before I left. I was responsible for making sure the local newspapers, news, and radio outlets knew about all of our programs, activities, and special exhibits.
And then I moved. Got married. Started having babies. Started a blog. And here we are.
I stayed in touch with the changes that were taking place in the digital marketing space. Blogging helped a lot. It’s still changing and I’m doing a pretty good job keeping up. But after managing an online community on social media of a growing list of over 1,300 moms in my community, I’ve realized some things.
Business owners don’t quite know how to market their businesses online.
One of the rules I only allow once a week in my group is that any mom can promote their business on Mondays. That’s it. All other promotions will be deleted by yours truly. Them’s there the rules.
I hate spam and this is not what the online community I built is about. Not to mention it could cause people to leave and I don’t want that.
Online Marketing Mistakes You Could Be Making.
First, did you know that FB’s terms of service does not permit you to directly do business on your personal FB page? At any time your personal profile can be closed down taking with it any online groups and/or pages you’ve created or are a part of. Even worse…they can take all of your photos! What now?
- Relying on friends and family to support your product
Your FB friends and even your family (gasp!) may not be your ideal client, so why do you keep promoting to them? Not to mention, you’re limiting your customer base because your Facebook profile is closed to just friends. How are you going to gain new clients? Friends don’t always share your posts.
Not all of your friends will support you because they can’t afford your product, they’re not your ideal client, and your posts don’t always come up in their news feed. Darn algorithm!
- Posting in Online Facebook Groups for Potential Clients/Sales
While you may get some clients/sales by posting on social media, you shouldn’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Everybody isn’t scrolling through their timeline all day every day to see your delicious cakes, adorable tees or bows, or what nots. There is a better way to market to people and keep them coming back.
Also, what annoys me most is when people drop links to their product, website, etc. and run. They don’t come back to engage in any other threads. OPPORTUNISTS! They don’t even engage in topics posted by others that may be relevant to their business which could potentially gain them clients. Bad move.
- Your Posts Aren’t Engaging or “Like” Worthy
I can’t believe how many times I have seen photos online that don’t warrant a second look due to bad lighting. Folks, just put your product up to a window and snap a picture. Natural lighting is best. Bathroom lighting is amazing and the brightest room in my home. If this means that you can only take photos at 7 a.m. in the morning in your kitchen window that faces east, have at it.
